Synopsis

Mediocre Movies… Star Wars Episode II – Attack of the Clones

Ah, another Star Wars entry to celebrate George Lucas’s nifty computer generated effects obsession. Episode 2 luckily offered viewers a few more interesting twists than its predecessor, despite Lucas still requiring his actors to eat, sleep and bathe in front of green screens. The occasionally awful acting of an (almost) universally excellent cast is another strike against Lucas’s directing ability and proof that attempting to guide his actors was on a “to do” list thrown out years before.

As with the Phantom Menace, the visual elements and creativity behind them are the saving grace of Attack of the Clones. Unexceptional dialogue and acting might make you want to reach for the closest death stick, but Attack of the Clones manages to outshine the Phantom Menace in terms of spectacle. Huge battles consisting of some of the most powerful characters in the galaxy are highly entertaining and work well alongside well-designed aliens, bustling sci-fi cities and highly engaging sound design. These will capture many viewers attention over the course of the film’s length, but those not buying into the spectacle might find the 2 hours and 22 minutes a bit of a drag.

Watch this Mediocre Movie if…you love a good science fiction/fantasy battle, like the idea of watching Ewan Macgregor tell Hayden Christensen off, are already invested in the franchise, don’t mind turning your brain off and getting washed up in an occasionally inconsistent adventure.
